Beatty takes its name from Reginald Beatty, a Hudson's Bay Company employee who was the first settler in the Melfort district. The community was named in 1904, after and by Beatty himself. A post office opened in 1908, and by 1925 Beatty was a Canadian National Railways station on the Swan River to Prince Albert branch line. The village incorporated on March 31, 1921.
Hockey was the heart of community life. In 1948 local volunteers built the Beatty Memorial Rink, and when it was condemned years later, the town rallied and built a new one. The Beatty Barons senior men's team won the provincial championship in 1985, and the village fielded pre-novice and novice teams until 1993. That year, because of financial troubles, the rink was sold to Rocanville, which took it apart piece by piece and moved it 423 kilometres away.
Schooling began with Beatty School District #1766, a one-room schoolhouse. A second one-room school for the higher grades, up to grade 12, operated from 1933 to 1967. Today children are bussed to school in Melfort. In 1978 local fundraising paid for a community centre, which still hosts weddings and community events. Farming remains the main source of work in the area.
